Fashion

Thank you for choosing the Psychology Shop! We are a psychology-informed store, looking to explore the buying experience as a test bed to support further research into fashion psychology.

Did you know there’s a field of psychology that explores looking fashion through a psychological lens?

PBI's Fashion Psychology Expert is Zoe Shaughnessy. Zoe says:

"Clothing is among the most visible and socially consequential forms of self-expression available to human beings. Every morning, the act of getting dressed constitutes a micro-communication to the self and to the world: an assertion of identity, mood, affiliation, and aspiration.

"Fashion psychology is the scientific study of how clothing choices and personal style influence human behaviour, cognition, and emotional well-being. It explores why we wear what we wear, how our garments impact our mood, and how society perceives our appearance.

"Enclothed Cognition: This refers to the psychological changes and shifts in confidence that happen when you wear specific clothing. For example, wearing a tailored suit or "power outfit" can physically boost cognitive sharpness, assertiveness, and negotiation skills."
